Love Song Friday, Volume 47

Happy Friday dance! I hope you are enjoying your almost weekend! Today let's be short and sweet. Shall we?

Monday: Bridesmaid Dress Shopping
Tuesday: Day with my Husband
Wednesday: Wedding Dress Wednesday
Thursday: Spring Registry Must Haves: Outdoor Love
Friday: Q & A: How Did You Pick Your First Dance Song?

Today's song is fun, just a darn good time. Tyrone Wells Happy as the Sun is itching for me to put to a wedding highlight. It is sweet, upbeat and charming. Happy day loves!

Q & A: How Did You Pick Your First Dance Song?

It is finally Friday! Guys can I just say that helping my best friend really dive in and plan her wedding makes my heart full. Rachel (who you met here) and I skyped last night which is a fabulous invention I might add. We got to tear up together, we got to giggle and we got to go over wedding details. She is on a roll and planning perfectly. Proud of you Rachel!

Q: How did you pick your first dance song?

A. I can say that picking our song was really easy for us. I don't have a lengthy answer or solution. Any time I heard a song that I liked whether on TV, a movie or pandora, I wrote it down. I also thought back to songs that marked special moments in our relationship. I made a potential first dance playlist on iTunes and set a time for Rusty and I to listen to each song. Rusty didn't have much to do with planning our wedding but he did want to help select our song.

We played each song and even attempted a bit of dancing. We started to play Al Green's Let's Stay Together and fell in love. It fit our quirky personalities. We looked at each other and said, "This is it!" And just like that we picked our first dance song. At the wedding it was even sweeter. Every time I hear it I smile and if Rusty is with me we break out in spastic dancing.

My best advice is to not stress over the first dance song. There is a song that fits your personality and as Anne Hathaway put it in Bride Wars something for your couple style. Try dancing to your favorites. It is not only a reason to get close to your love but you get to practice for your big day. Try researching on the Internet. I also love real weddings on wedding blogs not only because of the inspiration and pretty pictures but because it lists what songs those couples used. It may provide direction!

Be back in a bit for Love Song Friday friends!

Spring Registry Must Haves: Outdoor Love

Nothing brings me more joy than writing this post. Well, at this moment at least. One of the biggest benefits of South Texas is the amazing weather. But Katie, isn't San Antonio really hot and dry? Why yes it is kind reader. It is a dry place but I love that. I can literally walk outside my front door and be 20 feet from a large cactus. How many people can say that? With living in South Texas it is very hot and come summer I may be hating myself for writing this post. Even with all the heat, I wouldn't trade our 97% sun shining days. An example of my South Texas love affair is this view from our home.

The past few weeks it has been dark and rainy off and on. I haven't even lived here for one year and rain already gets me down. Sunshine = happy Katie. Happy Katie = better blog writing. See how things work? Pretty easy system. I have posted before on how to conquer your wedding registry here plus posted on my favorite registry ideas here and here but today I wanted to talk a bit about fun Spring registry ideas. With all this weather talk I would like to point out that not only do I love a little sun on my skin but I love to grill outside. Well, scratch that. My husband grills while I watch and set the table. Sometimes I even get crazy and mix up a festive cocktail or a side dish. With all the things to register for from spatulas to bathroom towels I thought we could mix in a few patio treats too.

I am always excited when this time of year rolls around and I get to look at all the bright colors and neat finds for my outdoor space. We all need a nice patio to relax on and drink our coffee. No matter the size, these finds can make your space feel comfortable and the spot to entertain friends and family. I picked out a few traditional gifts to add to your list and a few unique ideas as well. I do love this time of year but I also love fall/winter because most of these things go on sale. I like love a good bargain. I also threw in a few cheaper finds with a mix of a few splurges.

Everyone needs a fabulous door mat for wiping your feet or for designing your whole patio around. Case in point is this lovely from Crate and Barrel for $19. You can snag your own here.

One thing that I cannot get enough of are lanterns. Whether they are paper lanterns, votives, candles or string lights, I love a soft glow on my patio. It really does set the mood for fun and a tad bit of romance. Once again Crate and Barrel has a pretty little number here for $20 smackers.

I also looked at one of my favorite places West Elm. I will say this and yes I am totally bragging but we have a West Elm outlet about 20 minutes from our house. And by outlet, I mean reduced stuff that costs more in stores but cheaper here. Sometimes the things are in surplus or have a minor ding but if that means I can get the same thing that is online/in the magazine for 40 - 50% less I will take it. If you ever come visit me or San Antonio I can take you shopping. Cris at Kiss my Tulle and I know the best spots. It is a date. Wear your best high heels tennis shoes.

Back to West Elm please. When there website pops up you get to see this...

I will gladly take an outdoor tent room. Doesn't this just make you smile? Rustic charm at its finest. Really, you should go check out their website and all their goodies. I did also find a few registry must haves.

Every patio table needs a good set of zig zag placemats like these babies. At $5 a pop, we all deserve a set of them.

And every reader knows my love for nautical anything. This post is a good example of why I love nautical. You can understand my excitement to see these outdoor nautical themed dishes. Excitement times 10 plus they range from $4 to $6.

Like I mentioned these things are standard items to add to your outdoor section of your registry but I did find a few extra fun things that I wanted to add. These next few gifts are the icing on the outdoor party cake.

A perfect DIY to try...

And you cannot forget your compact portable grill...

Are you in the Spring, sun shine spirit? If you want I can throw a get together so we can relax on our cozy patio. You are all invited! What registry finds are a must for your outdoor living spaces? Want to add to my list? Let's celebrate the gorgeous weather and the fact that tomorrow is Friday. Cheers...at 10:00 a.m.

Wedding Dress Wednesday

Hi friends! Pat yourself on the back because you have made it to the middle of the week. This week is moving quickly! Guess what today is? Wedding Dress Wednesday! Were you surprised? I am just trying to keep romance in our relationship. ha!

In between breaks of editing and blogging I am constantly looking at pictures and brainstorming wedding ideas. One topic that I wanted to talk about today is designing your wedding dress. More and more I am reading stories about brides who are having their gowns handmade. Have any of you given this a thought? Having a handmade gown gives you a hands on approach to one of the most important dresses you will ever wear. For the most part it can also be a one of a kind. I love the idea of picking out special details for your dress. I think handmade gowns worry brides that the dress may not be completed in time but designers are completing dresses in 8-10 weeks!

I was browsing Etsy and came across a fabulous designer. Sometimes the wedding gown designers on Etsy don't wow me but this designer did. Meet Ting Bridal. Ting and her sister JoJo create gorgeous bridal designs. They use the best materials and create masterpieces. They even let you add your own twist to your gown. I cannot get over how talented this team is. I seriously have loved each gown. Each one is unique and special! Take a look at my favorites...

And my favorite dress...

So have these pretty dresses made you think about hiring a designer? I think so! Any one have a story about the dress they designed? Any opinions on designing gowns? Let me know your thoughts!

Bridesmaid Dress Shopping

Monday people! A new day and a fresh start. How was your weekend? Was it full of fun and good weather? I have a true story to share with you all. My father-in-law works in San Antonio and lives in a hotel here. Since we are a few days into to Spring that means the temperatures are already reaching 85 degrees. One of the benefits of his hotel is the amazing pool area. It comes complete with a bar, pretty rock walls, a walk in pool and a hot tub. I spent yesterday and Saturday lounging by the pool not answering emails. Well, I did answer a few but they were taunting me. Potential brides are emailing about potential destination weddings. I am itching to travel to a new city and have a bit of new scenery.

How about I get back to the point of this story? I am a stickler when it comes to sunscreen. I hate wrinkles and skin cancer. It is such a sad disease and I have watched my sweet grandmother go through major surgeries. One look at the aftermath of her surgeries and any woman who say "H - No!" to laying in the tanning bed. I buy SPF 50 that is sweat proof and long lasting. I prefer to look young when I am older. Yesterday, it was hot and I applied sunscreen like a good girl. I laid under the sun and read for a bit. I reapplied sunscreen, took a dip and then actually moved under an umbrella to cool off a bit. I spent maybe an hour in the direct sun and in that time applied sunscreen twice. Texas is hot. We changed and went to dinner. At dinner I noticed that one of my legs was red but just on the side. I went into the restroom for further investigation and I burned. I was totally bummed. The oddest part of all of this is that I burned on my right side. Not just my right half, my side. The side of my leg is burned. The side of my arm is burned. Unfortunately this is not the only time that I have burned in odd shapes. I wish I had a picture to share of how it looks but who wants to see my red leg? Yeah, I didn't think so. How about a change of topic?

I recently declared that one of my dearest friends Rachel asked me to be her Maid/Matron of Honor. Isn't that gal crazy? One thing I love about Rachel is her attention to detail. I have probably spent close to $1,000 easily on bridesmaid dresses. I have loved every wedding and honestly every dress but I have not worn them ever again. Don't you love the saying, "And what I love most about this dress is you can cut if off and wear it again!" I have never done that. I haven't even worn the gowns that are already short other than the wedding. I am a guilty bride because the gowns my bridesmaids wore were long and red. Not your typically wear again type of gown. Rachel decided that she wants us to purchase a gown that we love and will wear again. We will be just like the not so matchy bridesmaids in this post.

I love the idea but I need help! Below are Rachel's colors that she told us to use when shopping for dresses. I love the peach and mint but may steer clear of the cream because it would be to bridal and I am not the bride this time!

Isn't her color selection so pretty? I really do think pretty is the best way to describe her palette. Please ignore the black ring around the peach circle. Not sure what is happening there. Since Rachel asked me to be apart of her big day I have been keeping my eye out for the perfect dress.

I figure I should start with my favorite dress first. It is gorgeous. It makes me go weak at the knees and would be a forever statement piece in my closet. It is so pretty but costs a pretty penny as well.

I am loving these little mint numbers.

I am having a hard time deciding. I feel that the cream/taupe colors are just to close to bridal gowns. I want something pastel and pretty. Can you guys offer any other dress store suggestions? Do you have a favorite on here? Let me know what you think. You guys can dress me! Wait, that sounded weird. You know what I mean friends. Happy Monday!

Love Song Friday, Volume 46

I know that I shared this picture on Wednesday but since so many complimented it I thought it would be the perfect photo to send you into your weekend. Guys, I am sad to say that Blogiversary week is coming to a close. No more candles. No more happy birthday renditions. No more cupcakes. Wait, scratch that. There is always a reason for a cupcake.

But in all honesty I am amazed at the love and support I received this week and each week. I know that I brag on y'all a lot and get mushy but without your readership LBP wouldn't even exist. It would just be me writing to no one. Thank goodness you read! ha! I am thankful for your honesty, encouragement and trusty advice. Thank you all for stopping by each day and growing this blog in numbers. Tear!

Now I promise to stop with all the sappiness and get to my favorite day of the week by far. Who doesn't love Love Song Friday? A reason to sing out loud. A reason to crank up your speakers and roll down your windows. Ah, Love Song Friday is the best! But before we get to this week's song, let us look back at the blog's first birthday:

Monday: A Day in My Life
Tuesday: (Surprise Video}
Wednesday: Checking Things Off
Thursday: Where are You Headed?

And now for the moment of truth. What song will she pick for her blogiversary Love Song Friday? I thought long and hard about this and just thought Colbie Caillat's Brighter Than the Sun was the perfect song for today. I love this song and it makes me smile. I really took two breaks writing this post to dance and sing the song. Maybe that should be the picture I put up on Friday posts? Wouldn't that be lovely? I also love music stripped down to just vocals and a guitar so today's version is just that. I love this little diddy!

Thanks again guys for celebrating with me this week! Take it away Colbie....

Blogiversary Week: Where Are You Headed?

Who doesn't love a large photo of me in ridiculous happy birthday sunglasses? I thought these were appropriate for the week we are having here on LBP. Blogiversary week (my husband mocks the term) is important to me. Think about it, I have written a lot. I have covered a lot of topics and there is still so much to go (as in years).

Today I thought I would recap a few things about this past year. When I first started this blog I knew that I wanted to blog about all things wedding. Throughout this past year I started these posts very stiff. I didn't have much direction on blogging but followed what every one else was doing. I would write and then post. No emotion and not much personality. A year later I feel like I am just now finding my voice. I know that I can be funny and be bubbly. I also can show bits of my heart and you still are excepting of me.

I have to be honest. Blogging brings about a lot of emotions. At times, I feel frustrated. Sometimes I am sad. Some days I cannot wait to write while others I feel my inspiration is running dry. Blogging has made my skin tough and my writing improve. People can be so kind and at the same time very bizarre. Today I wanted to cover a few categories and where I hope to take this blog. I am already looking forward to revisiting this post this time next year.

Readers + Posts: I averaged about 25 views a day when I started last year. Each day I continue to grow. Some posts get 500 views while others only get 200. Regardless, people are reading. I am constantly looking for new ways to grow readership. More on that in a minute. Since I started LBP blog I have written a total of 292 posts. Sheesh! With each post I feel a bit more accomplished and headed in the right direction.

Topics: In the beginning I only covered wedding related topics. Over time I have mixed in more real life experiences. I think this has helped my blog be a bit more relatable to brides. It is nice not to read what you should do but do what makes you happy. I hope to continue to mix life, love, happiness and wedding bliss. I hope to inspire women, encourage brides and make each of you smile. I am always open to reader suggestions if you would like to pass along a topic or two.

Tips and Advice Page: This a new idea that I am working to finish. This page is going to be coming soon to the blog. It will hosts all of my DIY ideas, inspiration boards, Wedding Dress Wednesdays, recipes, bouquets, tips, music and reader answered questions. Each post will be categorized and easy for each planning bride to find. Think of it as your bridal handbook.

Advertising: This is a few months away but something I am looking into doing. With each new reader I hope to connect them with the perfect vendor. Ads will be affordable of course but more importantly effective. It will help professionals grow their business while helping brides find a vendor they are confident in using.

Videos: Of course I want to continue to show you my work. Even though I keep my thoughts on these pages this is my portfolio. With each new wedding, I will be showing you the sweet couple. Videos make me smile.

A few things I have learned from blogging...

1. Be yourself. People appreciate it more.

2. Throw others methods to the wind. Blog your way while being courteous to other bloggers, professionals and business friends.

3. Put your twist on things. Be original. Don't copy content.

4. For each not nice comment(s)/email(s) there are 25 other positive responses. It is a blog at the end of the day. Life is bigger than mean folks. I haven't had to deal with many but on that rare occasion I smile, grit my teeth and politely respond.

5. If you want others to read your blog, take the time to read theirs. Pretty simple policy.

6. Inspiration is everywhere.

7. Keep it up. I hope to never stop writing, blogging or researching new topics. It keeps me on my toes.

8. I have the best readers. You guys seriously know how to make a girl smile.

I dream big. At times it scares me but mostly it pushes me. Who knows where life will take us but I am confident I will enjoy the journey. I am excited to grow as a writer. I am blessed to continue booking weddings. But mostly I am grateful to have an audience that cares. Thank y'all!

Blogiversary Week: Checking Things Off

Are you guys enjoying Blogiversary week yet? Yeah, Lovebird Productions turns 1 on Saturday but this week we are celebrating! If I could pop a bottle of Champagne with y'all I would. We can do a virtual cheers! So far we have seen what it takes to keep this blog running each day and also watched a video of 20 questions. I have loved getting to share more about me and my life. Once this week is up I plan on getting back to bridal business of course.

Many of you remember this post here about my best friends engagement. This past weekend I traveled back to Jonesboro for a wedding (that may have topped all weddings). Each time I film a wedding in Jonesboro I get to have a sleepover with sweet Rachel. It is a highlight for me. We might have talked in bed and read magazines on Saturday night. Just maybe. It was a late night for me but Rachel stayed up to talk. Yeah, she is great.

Before I continue with this story I must share a side note. A while back I wrote this post that I read quite often about goals I want to complete by 30. I promise this little blurb will make sense in a minute. Back to the story...

We had made plans to do a little bit of wedding talk and browsing when I got to town on Friday afternoon. I got to her house and she said that she had a gift for me. I love presents so of course I was immediately excited. I opened my gift to find a tube of red lipstick. Rachel then asked me to be her maid of honor. We hugged and cried! I cannot believe I get to be her maid of honor! I am so excited!

The reason red lipstick is such a big deal is because of my 33 by 30 post I want to wear red lipstick to an event or party. Rachel bought me the red lips to wear at her wedding. Isn't she the sweetest? That is a true friend. I tried out the red lipstick yesterday. It definitely takes some getting use to. ha!

Hi. My name is Katie and I need a tan. Also with Rachel's wedding I am getting to check another thing of my before 30 list. I will be helping plan her big day. I am getting to put things together of course with the help of the bride. I am excited to be a maid of honor plus wedding planner all while wearing red lipstick.

Since I have been given these duties I may need to freshen up on these posts about being the maid of honor here, herehere, here and here. I am so excited and blessed! What do you guys think of the red lips?

Blogiversary Week: {Surprise Video}

Guys, I had this awesome I idea for my blogiversary video. Since I am taking a small break from wedding talk I thought I would do a surprise video about me, life and love. I asked my closest girlfriends to send me a handful of questions. I had Rachel compile the list of questions. A few notes...

1. This was made at the end of the day. My makeup looks bad and I have a nice zit right next to my mouth. I love being a woman.

2. I talk about getting naked...on camera. I am so odd.

3. Rachel you are mentioned in the getting naked part. Sorry dear.

4. Rusty decided to answer a work call during the video taping so you get to hear his charming voice in the background.

5. I say um and make this clicking noise quite a bit.

6. Of course I included bloopers. Of course.

7. As established by other videos like this one here, I am so stinking awkward on camera. Why did I think this was a good idea? Seriously why?

If I ever mention doing a video again, please stop me friends. Text me to stop. Email me to stop. Call me and say don't do it.

No more complaining from me. Today I will be taking my lovely mom shopping. San Marcos outlet malls, you don't stand a chance. My mom also makes a nice surprise visit in the video too! Hope you enjoy this video and have a wonderful day!

Blogiversary Week: A Day in My Life

Happy Blogiversary friends! Yes sir, it is time to celebrate one year of blogging. You know when I started this blog I totally underestimated what blogging 5 days a week would mean. It is not just a hobby but something that I truly love. If you are planning on blogging about anything, you better make sure that you like your topic. As anyone knows who has read this blog at least once, I love weddings. I think I was born with a must-love-weddings gene. I go weak for sweetheart necklines, dollies, burlap and an amazing bouquet. Katie = Wedding lover.

Instead of bugging my husband every day with wedding talk I bug y’all. Can I just say I am so glad that you all have taken this journey with me? You all have been supportive and loyal to Lovebird Productions. With all the celebration I have a few fun posts for this week. Not only will you get a more in dept look at my life (which seems to be crowd pleasing posts according to statistics) but I will also share where I have been, where I want to go and what I have planned.

When people hear that I blog full time they stare at me blankly. I get questions from “Do you wear pajamas all day?” to “How many hours are you on the computer?” Instead of answering them randomly I thought I would show you a day in my life. I do work part-time in an office but thought you could see what those other two days are like. This post is also for my husband who thinks I pull these lengthy posts together out of thin air while sipping white wine. Now this isn’t always a typical day but it is pretty darn close. Blogging is hard work but every published post is worth it. Shall we?

8:00 – The alarm goes off. Normally Jane wakes me by standing on me until her 40 pounds drains the air out of me or she uses her new trick of sticking her wet nose under the covers on my feet. Rusty has already left for the day. I finally get up and take Jane dog on a walk plus workout. I either run two miles or do yoga. Yoga wins today. I also feed Jane, make breakfast, drink coffee, text my husband to say, “I love you” and take Jane out one more time. I also brush my teeth. Even though I sit behind a computer screen 80% of my day I do practice good hygiene.

9:15 – I start proofreading the day's post. I make sure I have run my post through Microsoft Word. I try so hard to use correct grammar and spelling by that doesn’t always happen. I make sure that the photos are credited properly and re-read the post about 10 times until I feel it is perfect. Once this is ready I triple check the spelling again. I am the world’s worst speller, which is ironic when it comes to someone who enjoys writing and reading so much.

10:00 – I press publish. I make sure that everything is correct on the front end of the blog. I push the link through Facebook and Twitter. I also take the time to read other blogs. I have to say as much as I love writing a blog I may love reading other blogs even more. I seriously love reading other peoples work. I comment on a few blogs and also share those blog links with my Twitter followers.

11:30 – I normally would leave for my part-time job but today I stay on the computer. I pull up my email and start responding to anything that came through my inbox the night before. I do things like answer bride questions, respond to inquiries about videography and today I create an invoice for a wedding I booked for December 1st. I send the invoice and contract to the bride and do a little happy dance for booking a winter wedding. I love winter all weddings.

12:30 – I venture into the kitchen for lunch. I normally eat tuna fish and crackers. I have recently developed a love of tuna fish. Everyone I know thinks it is nasty but I love it. Sorry if you don’t agree too. I also love Greek yogurt and treat myself to a piece of dark chocolate. Guess where I am headed back to? If you guessed the computer, you are right. So smart!

1:15 - Since I filmed a wedding this past weekend I start transferring the footage to my desktop. As it uploads I make notes of favorite shots, listen to audio clips and patiently (keyword) wait for the footage to upload. This takes close to three and a half hours.

While the footage continues to upload I clean house, tackle laundry and do dishes. Since I was gone all weekend laundry is a chore.

2:30 - Laundry is still not completely done but I do start reading a few articles about new wedding trends. I also make notes and brainstorm ideas for future posts. The footage from Joseph and Lindsey's wedding is still loading on the computer. I read a few more blogs and start working on my post for tomorrow. I have an idea of what I want to do but am still working out the kinks. I also take the time to respond to any and all comments left on the blog. It is important to me that people know I am glad they comment.

3:30 - I take Jane for a little walk before it is back to the computer. I have a mom of a groom who recently purchased two more DVDs of their October wedding. I work on creating an invoice for her, making the DVDs and finishing the cases for her. I plan to mail them tomorrow morning. I pin a few things and answer more emails that have come in to my inbox.

4:30 - I keep working on tomorrow's post. Once I come to a stopping point, I set up my camera to do a fun video for this week's blogiversary. It is a surprise that I will share with y'all later in the week. This takes a while because we all know how weird I am on camera.

6:00 - Rusty calls to say that he will be leaving the office in about 10 minutes. This gives me about an hour to get dinner ready and wind down my day so that I can spend some time with my husband.

7:00 - Rusty is home! This is one of the favorite parts of my day. We have a nice dinner and talk about our days. Monday nights use to mean we watched the Bachelor (yes, Rusty watched it with me) but since the show is not on any longer we decide to relax on the back patio for a bit.

8:30 - I start preparing Rusty's lunch for the next day. I finish the laundry and get it put away.

9:30 - We walk Jane dog one more time before bed. We usually stay up talking a bit longer. While Rusty goes to sleep I blog in bed. It may sound weird but at one point the blog was keeping me from getting into bed when my husband did. I hated that so I started blogging in bed. I work on tomorrow post and make sure that I am making sense. I answer a few more emails and read a few more blogs.

11:30 - Lights out!

Now you know that my day is not exciting at all. It may bore you but I love what I do. I love interacting with others and reading their blogs. Life is fun! Even though I stay behind the computer A LOT I try to make the most of it. Whether it is taking a break for a snack or to take a walk with Jane, my breaks from the computer are worthwhile. I love blogging and this week is a celebration! Happy almost one year Lovebird Productions. Gifts, happy birthday cards, comments and sweet birthday cards are welcome!

Love Song Friday, Volume 45

Friday friends! Smell that smell? That is the weekend. We will not be doing our normal Q & A session today due to this lovebird being on the road. This weekend I am celebrating this gorgeous couple:

Photo Source: Liz Boren via Simply Stated Photography

I am so excited to be apart of their day. I also get to try out my new battery. Did I mention it lasts up to 12 hours? This battery is big time. Tomorrow will be a tad longer than that so we will really get to put it to the test. I may be the only one who gets excited about new equipment. More than likely. I am also anticipating Joseph and Lindsey’s St. Patty (Paddy) Day Wedding Cake. For more on this fabulous couple and their love story click here.

Guess what next week is? My ONE year anniversary of starting this blog and lovely business. I cannot believe that you guys have read this thing for a year. What is wrong with y’all? Ha! Just kidding. One year of tears, laughs, love and pure bliss. I love this blog and don’t plan on going anywhere. (Knock on wood!)

Next week’s post will be a bit more personal. I will explain a few business things, a look at my every day life (pretty boring) and also let you know where this blog and business is hopefully headed. I can’t wait to share and celebrate next week. Next week think of it as bid day but a weeks worth of fun. For those of you who didn’t go Greek in college, that is okay. Next week = Party. I love a good party.

This week on Lovebird Productions...

Monday: Here's To...
Tuesday: A Dolla Makes Me Holla, Honey Boo Boo Child (I got a lot of love on this post. Who would have thunk it?)
Wednesday: Wedding Dress Wednesday
Thursday: Engagement Bliss
Friday: Work it.Com (Not an actual post but more of an action)

Today’s song is a definite oh my goodness this is the best song ever kind of song. Think back to high school, middle school, summer days, Barbies, soccer tournaments, lemonade stands. Whatever age you were the Cranberries Linger is one of my favorites. Hands down a crowd pleaser. So let your hair down, turn up your speakers, grab your lighter and sing along. Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger? Uh yeah, we do.

Want to pick Love Song Friday? Help a sister out. I love suggestions and plus you can show off your DJ skills. What more could a girl ask for? Cheers to a successful weekend sweets!

Engagement Bliss

Good morning y'all! Is it crazy to say that I miss y'all and am excited to see your faces every morning? I know, it does sound silly but tis true. From the time I close my laptop, put down my phone, stop with emails and tweets, I start thinking about the next day when I get to reconnect with you all. More than ever I feel like I am starting to develop a confident blog and a confident writing style. Sometimes I don't make sense but I really love it here. This blog is such a happy place and it is because of you. Sigh, I love y'all.

Today I wanted to talk about engagement pictures. Like I have mentioned before when I was planning my big day I didn't read wedding blogs or study bridal magazines. I just went with what I knew or had seen others do. Our wedding photographer is one thing I think we lucked out on. His price was extremely affordable and his work was amazing! Steven (photographer) did such a good job at making Rusty and I feel comfortable.

When it came to our engagement session we went with a cityscape scene because for my bridals I wanted to be out in the woods. Luckily our photographer was in Hot Springs (about 25 minutes from our wedding site) and we LOVE downtown Hot Springs. It is an old fashioned spa city with a lot of charm. Our engagement session was very us. We didn't use props because I didn't know people did that (at the time). We didn't dress up in fun outfits because like I said, I didn't know people did stuff like that. So how do you decide on your engagement style? Location? Theme? Jon boat? Well I can help. Warning: These pictures represent the long hair days. List time....

1. Selecting your photographer. Pick the right one. Hands down this is one of the most important things you will do for your wedding. Talk about an investment! These pictures are forever so research, make a list, contact, get to know, be friends and smile for the camera.

2. Picking the perfect location. One thing that we liked about Steven is he helped answer a lot of questions. He pointed us in the right direction. Find a few of your favorite places and stick with them. Sometimes it is easy to get swayed or question your instincts when it comes to your bridal style. Need help finding that place? Where did you go on your first date? The first time you said I love you? Where did he proposed? Your favorite weekend activity? Start with these places and I am sure you can find the spot for your pictures.

3. Staying true to yourself. Be you friend. If pin up girl is not your style, don't do it. If you don't want to go on a picnic, you don't have to. Showcase you.

4. Get creative! If you have a fun idea in mind why not do it? Do what makes you happy, whether that is fishing on the lake or kissing over coffee. Find what you like and live it out. It makes for such cute pictures.

5. Have fun! When Rusty and I first started our engagement session we were beyond stiff. We had no idea how uncomfortable we would feel in front of the camera. Our photographer worked to loosen us up and forget about the camera. It took us a bit but we really did enjoy ourselves! I don't know if other couples feel this way but our engagement session was very intimate. Yes, we laughed a lot but there were moments when it was just Rusty and I. It sounds cheesy but so true. We got to giggle, tell secrets, sit close, hold hands, dance and my favorite, kiss. I could kiss that man all day.

I hope these tips point you in the right direction for having the best engagement session ever. These pictures are suppose to be fun and something to show your friends, family and one day babies. Relax. Smile. Kiss. Love one another. This is the time of your lives!

Wedding Dress Wednesday

Hello friends! It is officially the middle of the week. Last night I was browsing our DVDs and of course I have a tiny section of movies compared to Rustys shelves of movies. Ironically enough I realized that my movies all carry one theme. I will give you guys one guess. Comedy? Nope. Romance? Sort of. Wedding themed? How did you know? ha! 96.75% of all my movies have to do with weddings. Like that statistic?

A few of my favorites include The Wedding Date, Sex and the City, Bride Wars & 27 Dresses. Last night to draw a little Wedding Dress Wednesday inspiration I watched Made of Honor. I could stare at McDreamy forever. While smiling about Patrick Dempsey in a kilt, I came across Melissa Sweet and once again praised the good Lord for wedding dress designers. Melissa Sweet launched in 1999 and became a bridal sensation due to her glamorous style. Priscilla of Boston carried the line but since the store has closed I am not sure which boutiques carry the pretty gowns. I love the modern touches of feathers mixed with classic lace and flowers. I did find a few websites that sold the gowns used or marked down. To look at a few of those pretties click here and for my favorite click here.

A Dolla Make Me Holla, Honey Boo Boo Child

Before you immediately think I have lost my mind (husband included), watch this video. The last few minutes are the key to understanding this posts title.

When I told my husband what I was naming today's post he, without hesitation, told me not to. He also informed me he is my business adviser. Got to love that guy. As you can see I stuck with this title. What did you think about that video? I am sure most of you have watched it and many of you want to know "How in the world can she redeem this post?"

Today I am being 100% honest and real. Yes, I am every day but today I am attempting to tackle a difficult topic. The dolla, dolla bill y'all. Wedding blogs always show the fun and exciting moments (which they should), the babys breath and mason jars but they never prepare you for life after marriage. I could write a whole book about life after marriage but today I want to focus on money.

Money is a whole different ball game once you are married or engaged. Before we go any further I do not want to scare you. No matter of money is worth skipping out on the joys of marriage. Marriage is such a blessing. I know not every couple is the same. What works for Rusty and I may not work for you and your other half but if I can help one person, this post is worth it.

When Rusty and I got engaged we decided to join our bank accounts and have one account. While this may not work for everyone, we decided that we wanted to compile our incomes into one account. After first it was nice to see our little accounts grow to a bigger amount in a joint account. Rusty and I love marriage and life together but the only thing we have argued about during our marriage is money. Sometimes financially we have not been on the same page. Money is hard. Money stinks. Money makes the world go round. Money is...blah but there are ways to make money more enjoyable.

After time we finally found a system that works for us. I am a penny pincher while Rusty would like to indulge a bit more. We have really learned a healthy balance for our marriage and each other. I won't go into every single detail but I do want to share a few tips on how to make money easier as a married couple. By NO means are we experts in the finance department but I have learned a lot in just the past two years.

1. Pay your bills first. Each time we get paid we sit down and pay all of our bills first. Once we have paid our bills, looked at what is coming up for the next two weeks (time between pay periods) then we save and/or decide what to do with the remaining amount of funds.

2. How are you working together? Money, regardless of who makes the most, is something that you do together. Even if you have separate bank accounts, your incomes help make up your livelihood. Work together to make financial decisions. Make sure you are constantly thinking of one another whenever you swipe that card or withdraw that cash.

3. Compromised lately? Yeah, you even compromise when it comes to spending money. At times I may want to spend a bit more and Rusty doesn't. We talk things over and make the best decision for our family. Sometimes those talks can get heated especially when trying to persuade the other. Healthy compromise is key to a good marriage.

4. Treat yourself. Even with all the saving and penny pinching, treat yourself too. You don't have to go drop $100 on an expensive meal or buy a new wardrobe but splurging on something you both enjoy is important. You cannot just save, save, save and not enjoy a moment here and there. Sometimes you need to buy a nice bottle of wine or get tickets to your favorite comedian. You deserve it.

5. Debt may happen. I say this one cautiously. I have people tell me all the time debt is always there. I 100% disagree. You don't have to be in debt. Well if it isn't one thing it is another. That may be true in life but every single decision you make financially now affects your future, your children and your life. While you may start marriage with student loans, (I hate student loans. That is a whole other post.) you can pay those off. If you need a new car, don't spend outside your realistic funds or comfort zone. Yes, we all want to drive a brand new car but that doesn't mean that is the best option for your family. Spend wisely and pay things off. You may pay that credit card off to only have to replace all your tires. Small debts that take a month or two to pay off happen but debts that take years to pay off are avoidable. We aim to pay our credit card off every month. Well you guys must have a lot of money to do that. Um, hardly but we are smart where we spend. Paying off your credit card each month saves so much moola in interest. Interest sucks! If you do acquire a handful of large debts, pick one and pay it off then move on to the next one. Keep your cards paid off and like I said every decision you make now affects your future. Yeah, I could go on forever with this point.

6. Do you really need it? Just think about. I have a rule of thumb and I try to pass it on to every girlfriend. I always ask myself do I love it? If I love it, more than likely I will buy the item. If I am so-so or not 100% sure about an item then I skip purchasing it. It makes things so much simpler.

7. Make wise investments. I cannot stress this enough. I think people think of investments as only stock or a 401k but to me investments are so much more. I think investments are starting a college fund for your child. That is a true investment into your future. Research each investment and choose wisely. If you like the stock market, take your pick. If you are interested in rental property, look to you find the perfect space. Pick something that interests you both.

8. Don't give up. No matter what work to always try to do your best together. You never want to look back and regret or wish you had done things differently.

9. Celebrate your achievements. There is nothing like seeing your hard work pay off. Nothing like it. Whether it is paying off a credit card or buying a house, no accomplishment should go unnoticed. Being smart financially is an achievement in its self. Celebrate those happy moments!

Like I said before, I am not an expert. But I do know what it is like to pay on debt, watching your savings grow then have to pay an unexpected cost, invest in things, get a raise, make sacrifices and go through trial and error to find something that works. I also thought I would share a few things we do to save money.

Ways we try to save...

1. Eating in. We use to eat out a lot. I love eating out but eating in is so much better. We eat better. We save money. We get to spend time around the dinner table. We get to use our pretty dishes. Well maybe that is just me who gets excited about that. Cook a meal together. It will change your eating out preferences.

2. Coupons. I clip with the best of them. If it is a $4 off at Kohls or $1 off my favorite oatmeal, I use coupons to our advantage.

3. Finding the best price. It never hurts to research a bargain. Ask store employees when the next sale is and possibly wait for those dates. Furniture and hardware stores usually have major holiday sales. We love those!

4. Encouraging each other. We love to talk about how we have saved or praise each other for finding the best price. It feels good to be encouraged when it comes to anything but especially saving.

5. Setting a goal. We are currently trying to save a certain amount of money right now for a few reasons. It is so nice to have a goal and works towards it! It gives us direction and stops me from too many lattes.

6. The sale rack loves me just the same. I rarely pay full price for anything. If it is something I have to have or we truly need I will pay full price but a majority of the time I am shopping the sale isle or clothes rack.

7. Talking about what we are saving for. We have the set goal but before I reach for the 3rd latte in the two weeks, Rusty reminds me of the bigger picture. This may be the time to mention that we are building our first house!! I cannot tell you how excited we are but it has taken us a while to get to this point. Every time we want to spend too much we just think about the overall picture.

8. Sharing with others. Sometimes I can borrow or trade with a friend. When it comes to magazines or books, trade with a friend and vice versa. Even if it comes to a few dishes for a dinner party, I will gladly let friends borrow and return later. It is always nice to trade and borrow with them!

9. Garage sale time. We have an annual garage sale. With moving into our new house I have already started a pile for a garage sale this summer or early fall. It not only makes a little bit of money for your family but I will get to meet my new neighbors!

10. Keeping your dates free. There is nothing like a date night with my husband. Date night at the movies or going to dinner is nice but we also have plenty of free options too! We love to walk around our countryside neighborhood, visit the park, stroll to downtown, walk around a flea market, movies in the park or a $1 netflix movies. There is always something happening around town that cost nothing to be apart of.

I know that I kept this post really long but I feel like I we can all save here and there. Finances can be difficult at times but remember that your marriage is so much more than money. Your marriage is stronger than a disagreement over money. Always be open with your significant other. What ways do you try to save? What are you working towards saving for? Have you paid off any recent debts?

I hope that you all have the best day ever! See you tomorrow for Wedding Dress Wednesday!

Here's to...

Hi friends! My name is Katie and I am a bit blue today. Ever have those days where things are weighing heavy on your mind? No? Well today is one of those days for me. I didn't know exactly what to post today. With all the cheeriness and laughs that normally take place on Lovebird Productions (but is a bit lacking today), I thought the best way to lift my spirits is to list what I am thankful for. But isn't this a wedding blog? Not exactly. More than ever this blog is becoming my diary. My safe place. Where I turn to.

I made a list. Shocker...

1. Here is to my husband. A man who works so hard for this family and is my perfect balance. I mean perfect balance.

2. Here is to this blog. Two weeks away from a year of blogging about wedding, life and love.

3. Here is to you, ole faithful reader. I really am glad I have you friend.

4. Here is to my lovely city. New Braunfels really is such a happy place.

5. Here is to my love of Coca Cola. I heart you.

I am already feeling better. (Hence #5)

6. Here is to each and every planning bride. I am so happy for where life has brought you and the amazing future you are about to have.

7. Here is to vacations. I would like one.

8. Here is to my friends and family. I love you all.

9. Here is to the future. May it be bright, clear, abundantly blessed and full of happiness.

I feel like we should toast after this post. I promise to be back tomorrow with a clear head and heart. Thank you for letting me venture away from the normal wedding post and share a bit of my mind. That is why I love you guys. You just go with it. Until tomorrow!

Love Song Friday, Volume 44

Work it Friday! Work it. Guys, we are nanoseconds away from the weekend. Any fun plans? You know I would love to hear about them.

This week we...

Monday: A Little Family Style Supper
Tuesday: My Best Friends Wedding
Wednesday: Wedding Dress Wednesday
Thursday: Recipe: Green Bean and Shallot Salad
Friday: Q & A: Who Do I Invite to Which Shower?

I am t-totally in love with today's song. But Katie you say that every.single.week. Well this song takes the cake, wedding cake that is. You know wedding cake is the best cake too! If any bride wants to use this song for her first dance or walk down the isle, please send me the video. I would love to see it!

Last season on American Idol I fell head over heels (sorry Rusty) for a musician in a rose tux jacket named Paul McDonald. Even though he didn't last that long on the show, he is forever one of my favorite, true musicians. I was even more thrilled when he tied the knot with the beautiful Nikki Reed. A vampire mixed with a hippie musician. I will take it.

A day or two ago I saw heard and watched their new single Now That I've Found You. Talk about crying! I love the sweetness of their voices together. I love how the video reminds me of an amazing wedding video. I love how the two of them compliment each other so well. No more talking. Just press play lovers.

Who knew Nikki was such a good singer? I am okay with you listening to this song 3,294 more times today. I will be too! Have a great weekend and know that I will miss you all! See you Monday sweets.

Q & A: Who Do I Invite to Which Shower?

Don't you wish you could be were this picture was taken? The weather in South Texas has not been pleasant to say the least but it is a bit chilly today. I love cold weather. It gives me a reason to wear a scarf. This picture is where my head is today. Sigh. I encourage each of you to take a minute and think about one thing you are thankful for. Ready, Go! Do you have that thing in mind? If it is a friend, let them know. If it is your job, tell your boss thank you. If it is an object, treat it extra carefully. I came across a quote recently that made me really appreciate all I have been blessed with and pushed me to work for more. William Arthur Ward said, "Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings." Just think of all the blessings around you. Friends, do more of what makes you happy and be thankful for moments in between.

Who is ready for today's question and answer session? Me! Pick me! I can honestly say that I have never been asked this question from a bride before. Originally I was going to keep these short but folks I have a lot to say so let's get to it.

Q. Who do I invite to which shower?

A. The easiest way I know how to address this question is to break down each group of people by category. One thing that I have stressed from the beginning for any planning bride is to get that guest list started. Yes, not everyone on the list will be invited or they may but getting those addresses together is a must. Read more on that here. When it comes to shower time, you can have those addresses completed and ready to send the hostesses of the party. You can also print the list off for your bridesmaids to keep track of who gives you what. I also have suggested this before (read about it here and here) but you can also ask guests when signing in to address an envelope with their address. It eliminates one step for you when it comes time to write thank you notes.

What if you aren't sure how many showers you are going to have? That is okay. With time you will be 100% sure. I promise people will want to throw you a shower. I actually worried about this. By the end of the shower season, I had been blessed with 6 showers! It amazes me how much people care and want to celebrate your upcoming wedding.

Wedding Party/Bridesmaids - This one is your discretion. I invited my bridesmaid to every single shower that I had. With that being said, I also let them know before the shower season hit that I would invite them to all of them but only expected them to make it to one shower and/or the bachelorette party. I had bridesmaids all over the place and being the rockstars that they are they each made it to multiple shower and the bach throw down. Yeah, we threw down. With this group it is easy to let them know your expectations ahead of time.  More than likely your bridesmaids will help in hosting at least one or two showers. Be honest with them and they will appreciate it.

Family - This one can be a little tougher just because you do not want to hurt anyone's feelings or make them think they have to get you a gift. My best piece of advice for this is to invite your families to the hometown showers. For example, if you and your groom grew up in different cities invite your family to your hometown shower and the groom's family to the shower in his town. You can always invite your family to multiple showers but I usually say the rule of thumb minus your parents is to invite someone to only one shower. I did have family come in to town from miles away so when they came down they attended the showers that fell on that weekend.

Friends - Like I have already mentioned, I invited friends based on their location to each shower but only one time. Friends, especially newly married brides, give the most practical gifts. They know exactly what you need. I did have one shower where I invited all my close girlfriends and sorority sisters. This helped everyone get to know each other or reunite with faces they hadn't seen in a long time.

With all this being said, DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT invite someone to a shower and then not invite them to your wedding. It is a big bridal no-no. I have had multiple people mention this to me in that they were invited to a shower, took a gift, hugged the bride but then didn't receive an invitation to their wedding. Think about it. Would you want to spend money on someone then not get an invite to the reason you even gave them the gift to begin with? I hate to say it friends but that is tacky. T-acky.

I hope that all of this jib jab helps point you in the right direction. I can honestly say that showers were a highlight for me. The guest lists for each shower were easy to make. I also asked both my mom and mother-in-law to add to any shower list that they felt needed it. Both were a big help!

At each shower, smile, hug necks, meet new faces and remember these people love you. They want to celebrate you! I will be back in a bit with the best Love Song Friday, hands down!

Recipe: Green Bean and Shallot Salad

This past week my husband put in 80 hours at work. Yeah, I don't know how he is functioning this week either. I am grateful for a hard working man but also with him being gone I accomplished a lot of little things. Little things include cleaning out our mail holder, reading a few extra blogs and catching up on my Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine. The magazine usually sits for a week or two before I get to crack it open.

In the new issue they included a few brunch recipes and different table decor options. The recipes ranged from a crispy potato cake and quiche to a sparkling grape cocktail and linzer cookies, which I am dying to make. Those cookies look amazing and very tasty! I did see one recipe that I knew would be perfect with our steak that would be grilled later that evening. I ventured to the grocery store and grabbed one handful of fresh green beans and three shallots. I had never cooked with shallots so I am beyond thrilled to give them a go. I may be the only one but new recipes make me excited. Ask my husband. It is a weird thrill when I get to skip through the store filling up our basket with new items and ingredients.

When we got back home I decided to get started on the green bean recipe because one thing about new recipes is I don't always know just how long it is going to take. I gathered my ingredients and realized that the recipe called for red wine vinegar when I only had balsamic. I substituted the two in hopes that the recipe would still taste good. It did!

Now before I get started on this I want to give everyone a BIG warning. The house we rent right now is amazing. We live in the Texas hill country. We have tons of yard. Our house is on top of a hill. Our view is incredible. Our back patio is homey. Our yard boasts all sorts of wildlife. Our house has so much space. Our house is old and fun. See all the good things about our current home? Well, when you strike out on a deal with a rent house in prime location you do have to take a few things that don't make you oh so happy. Case in point: our kitchen has orange counter tops. Orange? No I am not kidding, ORANGE. It is a lot to take in. We have been in this house almost a year and I still get shocked walking into the kitchen in the morning. With all this being said, the pictures for this recipe features the little beauty's.

Here is what you need:

Like I mentioned I did adapt this recipe quite a bit for our family. The original recipe serves 8 guests but we have a house of 2 so we cut back on things. We didn't use as much of some ingredients and also substituted the red wine vinegar to balsamic like I mentioned earlier.

Ingredients:

Ice Water
3 Shallots, peeled and chopped (original recipe says to do 3/4-inch thick rounds)
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
A handful of green beans, trimmed (which is something I forgot to do)
1/2 tsp. paprika (the original recipe calls for sweet smoked paprika)
1 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. dijon mustard
Salt
3 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Let's get cooking:

1. Fill a large bowl with ice and water. This is to help shock the green beans once they have finished boiling.
2. Fill a large pot with warm water and salt and begin to boil on the stove top.
3. Trim those green beans and begin chopping the shallots. Once the shallots are chopped, place them in a bowl and add 2 tbsp. vinegar and toss. Refrigerate.

4. Once the water is boiling add the green beans and cook for 2-3 minutes. Once they are done, drain them in a colander. Transfer the drained green beans to the bowl of ice water. This helps the beans cool evenly.

5. Now it is time to make that tasty dressing for your beans. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining vinegar, paprika, mustard and worcestershire sauce. Throw in a pinch of salt and drizzle in 3 tbsp. of EVOO.

6. Drain the beans from their ice bath and pat them dry. Place the beans in a fun serving dish and add the shallots making sure to drain the liquid from the bowl first. Pour in the vinaigrette and toss together.

7. Serve and watch your guests, friends and family enjoy them!

This recipe is so easy and simple. It takes only about 30 minutes total to serve up a healthy and tasty new dish. Most of the ingredients you already have at home. I hope this tasty treat will be hitting your kitchen table sometime soon.

Friends, I hope you have a wonderful day and just remember tomorrow is Friday! Eeeek!
